Selena Gomez confirmed on Friday’s Live with Kelly and Mark that she told fiancé Benny Blanco she loved him before he said it back.
The exchange came while the co-hosts were discussing Gomez and Blanco’s album I Said I Love You First, released in March. After Gomez nodded when asked whether she had said the words first, Kelly Ripa and her husband and co-host Mark Consuelos leaned in to hear more and asked whether the declaration was planned or accidental.
Gomez said she did say it first and described how the moment unfolded. "No, honestly, I just ruined it," she told Ripa, saying she interrupted an evening in which Blanco had been trying to plan a romantic moment. "He was so lovely about it and tried to plan something, and I was sitting there, bragging about, oh, well, my best friend’s boyfriend just said, you know, that he loves her… it was just so ridiculous. So at the end of the night, I was like, ‘I love you! Okay, I love you.’"
Gomez said Blanco initially laughed and then replied, indicating he had been preparing to say the phrase. "He said it back, because I knew he was trying to," she said.
Ripa contrasted that account with Consuelos’s story about his own early declaration of love to Ripa, saying Consuelos had told her that his first "I love you" came out "by accident." “It fell out of his mouth,” Ripa said on the show. Consuelos added that the moment nonetheless "felt real."
Live with Kelly and Mark airs on weekdays. The conversation offered viewers a glimpse into Gomez and Blanco’s public romance and the personal anecdotes Ripa and Consuelos have shared about their relationship over the years. Gomez and Blanco, who announced their engagement earlier this year, released their collaborative album I Said I Love You First in March, which the couple have referenced in interviews and on social media.
Friday’s segment continued a pattern for the syndicated daytime show of mixing celebrity promotion with light, personal exchanges between hosts and guests. The program posts episode information and local listings on its website.
