Mandy Teefey, mother of pop star Selena Gomez, is facing social media backlash after an Instagram post many fans interpreted as a veiled criticism of her daughters. Teefey's post, which included a mirror selfie of Gomez and her younger half-sister, Gracie, was captioned "My greatest accomplishments, love me or not." She further added, "Who never gives up when they throw me in the trash. I tell ya mom you’re doing it wrong, maybe so, we will see. But no matter what I got your back."
The carousel post also featured memes and quotes, including one with a doll in a trash can and the phrase "Me when I have to run the business I manifested." Another slide read, "She outgrew what drained her," and a third stated, "Just to be clear, I’m that loyal friend who would take a bullet for you. But I’m probably also the reason we’re getting shot at. Balance matters."
Fans quickly took to the comments section to express their disapproval. One user wrote, "WTF, Mandy. If you’re having issues with them, you shouldn’t post this on social media. People will take it out of context and keep hating on Selena. I don’t know what’s going on, but go talk to your daughter instead of creating drama."
Another commenter stated, "Posting about this as the parent is quite a strange choice queen 💔." A viral post on X echoed similar sentiments, reading, "One must keep their personal life to themselves and realise their daughter is too big of a celebrity to throw such tantrums."
In response to the criticism, Teefey commented on one user's post, "Girl. It’s typically moms not cool joke,” adding, “Calm down. lol.”
Teefey, who co-founded the mental health organization Wondermind with Gomez in 2022 and serves as its CEO, also posted a supportive message for Gomez and her partner, Benny Blanco, following their September wedding. She described the event as a "perfect celebration for the most kick ass couple I know!" and "a fairytale come true."
