A short video clip circulating on X captured Selena Gomez appearing to alert her fiancé, music producer Benny Blanco, that Martin Short was texting Meryl Streep during Sunday night’s Emmy Awards.

In the footage, Gomez — who attended the ceremony with Blanco — is seen glancing a few seats down where Short was looking at his phone and conversing with co-star Steve Martin. Gomez then turned back toward Blanco and appeared to mouth, "He's texting Meryl," accompanied by a half-pout and a smile. Streep did not appear to be at the ceremony.

Gomez, 33, stars on the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Short. Streep, 76, joined the cast as Short’s character’s romantic interest in the series, which follows three New York City residents who podcast about real and imagined crimes in their building, the Arconia.

Short, 75, and Streep first prompted public attention in January 2024 when they were photographed looking cozy at the Golden Globes. Representatives at the time characterized their relationship as friendship. Short reiterated that position during a February 2024 appearance on the Club Random podcast with Bill Maher, saying, "We're not a couple. We are just very close friends." Despite those statements, the pair were seen holding hands on the red carpet at the Only Murders Season 4 premiere in August 2024, and were reported by Page Six to have been dating "well over a year" as of March. In May, they were photographed kissing on set while filming the series.

The brief exchange in the audience drew attention because the three actors are principal members of the Only Murders ensemble and because public interest in Streep and Short’s relationship has persisted through appearances and on-set sightings. The clip’s circulation on social media followed a night of awards presentations that included many other celebrity moments and tributes.

Gomez and Blanco are reportedly preparing to marry; TMZ reported earlier this month that the pair plan to wed in Montecito or Santa Barbara, California. Neither Gomez nor representatives for Short or Streep immediately commented on the video clip.

Only Murders in the Building remains a high-profile project for all involved, and interactions among cast members continue to draw media coverage amid awards-season appearances and promotional events. The Emmys moment revived attention on a relationship that has been publicly discussed since early 2024 while underscoring how social media can quickly amplify brief, candid exchanges from award-show audiences.
