Sean Astin, known for his role as Samwise Gamgee in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, revealed that he had to sell his home due to the surprisingly small salary negotiated for the films. Astin shared in a recent interview with The Guardian that the compensation for the Academy Award-winning trilogy was not substantial, despite the immense success and visibility it brought him.
"I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access," Astin said. "And there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy."
Astin previously stated in a 2017 interview that he received $250,000 for his work across all three films, along with some earnings from merchandise sales but no residuals. At the time of the contract negotiation, he had purchased a home in Los Angeles and was informed he would need to earn $250,000 annually to cover his mortgage.
"It was an offer for $250,000 for a year and a half," he explained. "And I was like, ‘Wait a minute, my pen signed this contract, which obligated me to $250,000 a year, and I’m gonna sign this contract, which will make it so that I absolutely cannot satisfy that other thing.'"
He clarified that by the time the third film was released, his financial situation had improved due to other work he had undertaken.
Astin's experience echoes that of his co-star Cate Blanchett, who played Galadriel. Blanchett mentioned in a 2024 interview that "No one got paid anything to do that movie," adding that her motivation was to work with director Peter Jackson, who had previously helmed "Braindead." She also joked about receiving "free sandwiches" and keeping her ears, a reference to her character's distinctive features.
Other cast members, including Orlando Bloom and Elijah Wood, have also spoken about their modest earnings from the trilogy. Bloom told Howard Stern in 2019 that he was paid $175,000 for his role.
The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which also starred Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean, and Ian McKellen, achieved massive critical and commercial success. The first film, "The Fellowship of the Ring," grossed approximately $897 million worldwide, followed by its sequels which earned around $945 million and $1.15 billion, respectively. The trilogy garnered a total of 30 Academy Award nominations, winning 17 awards. "The Return of the King," the final installment, won all 11 of its nominated categories, including Best Picture, tying a record for Oscar wins by a single film.
