Scotland's 'Sad Oompa Loompa' Finds Joy in New Wonka Reality Show
Kirsty Paterson, who gained viral fame after a disastrous Willy Wonka event, stars in Netflix's 'Wonka's The Golden Ticket'.

Kirsty Paterson, the Scottish actress who became an internet sensation as the 'Sad Oompa Loompa' at a botched 2024 Willy Wonka Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, is now smiling after landing a starring role in a new Netflix reality show.
Paterson will feature in "Wonka's The Golden Ticket," a big-budget series set to debut on Netflix on September 23. The show aims to recreate the world of Roald Dahl's classic children's book, with contestants participating in challenges for a cash prize.
According to a trailer for the series, Netflix sought out Paterson to offer her a genuine Willy Wonka experience. In the footage, she receives a golden ticket that grants her a tour of Wonka's factory and a transformation into an Oompa Loompa. "I used to think I would always be a Sad Oompa Loompa until one day everything changed," Paterson is heard saying in the trailer. "I closed my eyes and woke up somewhere else entirely. Real Oompa Loompas, a real factory... I’m golden now. Turns out every sad story just needs a golden ticket."
Fans have described Paterson's new role as a "modern day redemption" and a "full circle moment."
Paterson's initial fame stemmed from her appearance at the February 2024 Willy Wonka Chocolate Experience in Glasgow. The event, which charged attendees £35 per ticket, was widely criticized for its sparse decorations and lack of promised attractions, leading to outrage among families and police intervention. The event was canceled midway through its first day.
Following the event, Paterson initially faced online abuse from some individuals who mistakenly believed she was involved in the event's organization. However, she later received support from parents who shared photos praising her efforts to cheer up the children. Netflix stated, "We found the Sad Oompa Loompa and gave her the Wonka experience she deserves."
After her viral moment, Paterson went on to star in a musical based on the chocolate experience and subsequently moved to Australia to start a new chapter in her life.
