Scotland's 'Sad Oompa Loompa' Finds Joy in New Netflix Role

Kirsty Paterson, known globally as the 'Sad Oompa Loompa' following her appearance at a disastrous Willy Wonka Chocolate Experience in Glasgow, is now smiling after landing a starring role in a new Netflix reality show.

Paterson, an actress from Glasgow, became an internet sensation in 2024 when photos of her looking glum in her Oompa Loompa costume at the event went viral. The event, which charged attendees £35 per ticket, was widely criticized for its sparse decorations and lack of promised attractions, leading to outrage among families.

Netflix sought out Paterson to feature in their new show, "Wonka's The Golden Ticket," which aims to offer her a genuine Willy Wonka experience. A trailer for the series shows Paterson receiving a golden ticket that grants her a tour of Wonka's chocolate factory and a transformation into an Oompa Loompa.

In a promotional clip, Paterson stated, "I used to think I would always be a Sad Oompa Loompa until one day everything changed. I closed my eyes and woke up somewhere else entirely. Real Oompa Loompas, a real factory." She described the experience as transformative, noting, "I’m golden now. Turns out every sad story just needs a golden ticket."

Fans online have described her new role as a "modern day redemption" and a "full circle moment."

"Wonka's The Golden Ticket" is set to debut on Netflix on September 23. The show will reportedly recreate the narrative of Roald Dahl's classic children's book, with contestants participating in challenges for a cash prize.

Following the widely publicized failure of the Glasgow event in February 2024, Paterson went on to perform in a musical based on the experience and later relocated to Australia. The original event, advertised as a "magical journey" with elaborate sweets and a chocolate river, instead provided attendees with a sparsely decorated warehouse and minimal treats. The event was canceled midway through its first day due to "unforeseen circumstances."

Initially, Paterson faced online abuse from individuals who mistakenly believed she was involved in organizing the event. However, supportive parents later shared photos commending her efforts to cheer up children, leading Netflix to comment, "We found the Sad Oompa Loompa and gave her the Wonka experience she deserves."
