Saoirse Ronan introduced a distinctive, short fringe at the premiere of her directorial debut, the short film "Paper Plane," during the 83rd Venice Film Festival on Thursday. The 32-year-old actress appeared on the red carpet in a navy maxi dress featuring a thigh-high slit with a silver zipper detail.
Ronan described "Paper Plane" as "a love letter to a younger version of myself, and a younger version of my mother." She elaborated on the film's themes, stating, "I wanted to explore how a young mind tries to make sense of something beyond their control; how love is expressed in times of pain, and how self-preservation takes root when one has spent their life watching someone they love struggle to love themselves and others in a healthy way." The paper plane, she explained, symbolizes "lost childhood and innocence, a need for connection between two people who love each other deeply but can’t find common ground."
The festival appearance comes weeks after reports surfaced that Ronan is being considered for a villainous role in the upcoming James Bond film. Her husband, actor Jack Lowden, 36, is also reportedly in contention for the role of 007. Ronan has previously expressed her desire to play a Bond villain, telling Empire magazine last month, "I want to go dark... I think it would be really interesting, having a young, female villain. Especially for girls and women, to see someone who can just take all that pent-up anger and direct it somewhere."
Amazon MGM Studios acquired full control of the James Bond franchise last year. The studio is reportedly in the casting process for the next installment, with an announcement expected this autumn and filming potentially beginning at the start of the new year. Producer Amy Pascal suggested that an announcement could be expected by the end of the year, noting that the next Bond will need to be "something really different that is stirring and exciting."
Ronan and Lowden, who first met on the set of "Mary Queen of Scots" in 2018 and married in July 2024, would present a unique "mister and missus" dynamic for the franchise. This speculation follows Ronan's past comments supporting Lowden for the 007 role. Other actors rumored to be in the running for James Bond include Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, and Tom Holland. More recently, British actor Jack Barton, 31, has emerged as a contender, reportedly undergoing screen tests. While casting directors are said to favor Barton, Amazon is reportedly seeking a more established actor.
