Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about the private battle her late partner, Bryan Randall, faced with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Randall died in 2023 after a three-year fight with the disease.

In an interview on the Smartless podcast, Bullock, 62, shared that Randall specifically asked her not to disclose his diagnosis. "I wasn't allowed to speak about it. That was the request, and I honored it," she stated. This secrecy, she explained, led to feelings of isolation, particularly as the COVID-19 pandemic coincided with the early stages of his illness.

"He was ill for half of our relationship and the diagnosis came almost at the same time with the cloak of the pandemic," Bullock recalled. "So as the pandemic came down, and I have a child with severe asthma – I was panicking. Then, we were trying to navigate all the tests, because with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis people – you don't go, 'Oh you have these symptoms, you have ALS.' It is literally like the process of elimination over the course of a year and somewhere you keep going back, and they give you all these milestones these things to do ... because ALS appears in different ways."

Bullock disclosed that she began grieving Randall four years before his passing. "Something in me said, start the grieving now because I knew I would be the caregiver," she said. She noted that her familiarity with caregiving, stemming from her parents' illnesses, helped her navigate the situation, though she admitted to not knowing where to begin with Randall's care and pain management.

She explained that keeping Randall's diagnosis a secret was difficult, especially as their two children, son Louis and daughter Laila, were aware of his condition. Bullock worked with child therapists to help her children cope with Randall's illness. "They could see, they have eyes. They are very, very astute kids," she said of Louis and Laila. "Very astute because they not only see the physical change, there's a behavior that changes in all of us. I'm hyper-vigilant, I became manic in my vigilance. I had to not only make sure he was OK, I had to make sure we could keep the nurses."

Bullock described the period as a "trifecta that was pretty dark," encompassing physical illness, mental health struggles, and the burden of secrecy. She admitted that the guilt of not being able to share her situation with friends, including Jason Bateman's wife, Amanda Anka, was significant.

Randall, a photographer, and Bullock met in 2015 when he was hired to photograph a birthday party for her son. His family confirmed his death in August 2023, stating he chose to keep his journey with ALS private and expressing gratitude to the doctors and nurses who cared for him. The family asked for privacy during their time of grieving.
