Sami Sheen said she was startled to learn that her father, actor Charlie Sheen, credited her with helping prompt his decision to get sober, after watching his documentary aka Charlie Sheen and reading passages from his memoir.
The 21-year-old, who has posted recent beach photos to Instagram, wrote on social media that she was “floored” by the film and surprised that her father singled her out as a motivating factor. “I didn't know I was the reason he got sober,” she wrote. Sami Sheen has previously discussed a fraught early childhood and said on Gia Giudice’s podcast that the first 13 years of her life were difficult but that their relationship is “OK” now.
In The Book of Sheen: A Memoir, published alongside the film, Charlie Sheen recounts a Dec. 10, 2017, episode in which he wrote that he was on his “third Macallan‑spiked coffee” and then realized, while on a drive with his daughter, that he had to change. He described calling a friend he identified as “Tony T.” for help and later wrote that seeing his daughter’s reaction in the car made him “desperate to finally come home for real.” According to the memoir, Sheen said he took steps immediately: “On December 11, I took two Valium and drank three beers. On December 12, I quit drinking for good.”
Sheen, 60, also wrote that Sami was “not my final straw; she was my first harvest,” language the actor uses in the book to describe the emotional catalyst for seeking treatment. Excerpts from the memoir and the documentary have focused on the actor’s long‑running struggles with substance abuse and his efforts to address them.
The documentary aka Charlie Sheen premiered in Hollywood on Sept. 4, 2025; Denise Richards, Sami’s mother and Sheen’s ex‑wife, attended the Los Angeles premiere. Sami, who lives in Los Angeles, is one of several children of the actor. Charlie Sheen also has daughter Lola, 20, with Richards; 16‑year‑old twins Max and Bob with ex‑wife Brooke Mueller; and daughter Cassandra Estevez, 41, from a previous relationship.
The memoir and film are part of a broader public accounting by Sheen of his personal and professional life, including past controversies and attempts at recovery. Sami Sheen’s public reaction underscores the personal impact family members described in the book and film, and offers a rare public response from a relative to the actor’s new accounts of his sobriety and family life.
