Actor Sam Neill, known for his roles in "Jurassic Park," "The Piano," and "My Brilliant Career," has died at the age of 78. His family announced his death, describing it as "sudden and unexpected." Neill died in Sydney, surrounded by his family.
Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, he relocated to Christchurch, New Zealand, with his family in his childhood. He adopted the name Sam at age 12. Neill began his acting career while studying at the University of Canterbury, making his film debut in the 1971 movie "The City of No."
His early work in New Zealand television and film led to wider recognition with the 1977 film "Sleeping Dogs," notable for being one of the country's first films to gain international distribution. He later moved to Australia, where his performance in "My Brilliant Career" (1979) helped establish him as a leading actor.
Sir Sam achieved global fame in 1993 for his role as palaeontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's blockbuster "Jurassic Park." He reprised this character in "Jurassic Park III" (2001) and "Jurassic World Dominion" (2022), and also lent his voice to the character in related video games. He also starred in Jane Campion's Academy Award-winning film "The Piano" in the same year.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon reflected on Neill's impact, stating that the actor "started out when there was barely a film industry in this country to speak of." Luxon added that for over fifty years, Neill "took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today – one of our greatest cultural exports." He wrote these sentiments on the social media platform X.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also paid tribute on X, noting that Neill "starred in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts."
