Sam Neill, the celebrated New Zealand actor known for his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in the 1993 film "Jurassic Park," died Monday at the age of 78. His family announced his death, stating it was sudden and unexpected. Co-star Rima Te Wiata told The New Zealand Herald that Neill had contracted pneumonia. This followed an announcement in April that Neill had been declared cancer-free after a battle with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Neill's family shared the news via an Instagram post, noting that he died at St. Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney, Australia, surrounded by family. They stated he passed with dignity and that, despite the sudden loss, he had remained cancer-free.

Colleagues and friends paid tribute to the actor. Laura Dern, who starred alongside Neill in "Jurassic Park," called him "my beloved lifetime friend," praising his loyalty, protectiveness, and wit. Director Steven Spielberg expressed his fondness for working with Neill on the "Jurassic" films, stating that Neill would never be forgotten by the cast or his fans.

Journalist Laura Tingle, who dated Neill, mentioned he had been unwell for several weeks, suggesting that recovery from his previous treatments for cancer had compromised his immune system. Tingle indicated that while he had undergone significant chemotherapy and immunotherapy, the toll may have been too much after clearing the blood cancer.

During his decades-long career, Neill amassed over 150 acting credits. His notable roles included "The Hunt for Red October," "The Piano," "Event Horizon," and "Merlin." He also appeared in the crime series "Peaky Blinders." Co-star Cillian Murphy described Neill as "one of the kindest, funniest and gentlest people, and one of the finest actors." Nicole Kidman recalled meeting Neill when she was 18 on the set of "Dead Calm" and described him as charming, kind, funny, and intelligent.

Born in Omagh, Northern Ireland, in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand with his family in the early 1950s. In recognition of his contributions to film, he was awarded a knighthood in New Zealand in 2022.
