Actor Sam Neill, celebrated for his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in the "Jurassic Park" franchise, has died at the age of 78. His family confirmed his passing on Monday, July 13, stating it was "sudden and unexpected" but that he had recently been declared cancer-free.

Neill's final public appearance was approximately four weeks prior to his death, at the Aria Hall of Fame Awards in Sydney. He shared a post on Instagram from the event, expressing admiration for the honorees, including singers Kate Ceberano, Jenny Morris, Vika, and Linda Bull. In the post, Neill appeared "happy and healthy," according to the Daily Mail.

His family's statement indicated that Neill died in Sydney, surrounded by loved ones, and that his passing was marked by the same dignity that defined his life. They expressed gratitude to the staff at St. Vincent's Private Hospital for their care and requested privacy during their time of grief.

In April, Neill had shared the news that he was free of cancer after a five-year battle with a type of lymphoma. He had detailed in an interview that his chemotherapy treatment had stopped being effective, bringing him close to death. A cutting-edge CAR T-cell therapy treatment, which genetically modifies a patient's own T-cells to target cancer, reportedly cost approximately AUD $540,000 and is credited with prolonging his life. At the time of his announcement, Neill expressed excitement about the positive scan results and had indicated plans to return to acting.

Neill, a New Zealand-born actor, had a distinguished career spanning decades, with notable roles in films such as "The Hunt for Red October," "Dead Calm," and the "Jurassic Park" series. He was also known for his work in television, including "Peaky Blinders" and "Alcatraz."
