Ryan Reynolds on Friday credited Sandra Bullock with helping him regain his footing after a stretch of poorly received films that he has described as being in "actor jail."

Speaking onstage at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Reynolds, 48, cited his experience co-starring with Bullock, 61, in the 2009 romantic comedy The Proposal as instrumental in restoring his confidence following career setbacks that included the 2011 superhero film Green Lantern and the 2013 action comedy R.I.P.D.

"When you’re working with someone like Sandra, if you work with a great tennis player, you just get better," Reynolds said after TIFF screened a clip of the pair from The Proposal. "Batting the ball with her was a dream, and I got better."

Reynolds acknowledged that in 2014 he felt he was in "actor jail," a phrase he used to describe a period when several of his projects underperformed critically and commercially. At TIFF he said he was intentionally stepping back from seeking creative authorship on projects, instead focusing on showing up and serving the people he worked with.

"This is a stage in my career where I’m not ready to have authorship. I’m really trying to show up, make the people I’m working with happy, and that’s my job, you know?" he said.

The remarks came during a festival conversation that reflected on Reynolds’s career arc, including early romantic-comedy work and later high-profile genre films. The Proposal, in which Reynolds and Bullock played a bickering boss-and-assistant duo, remains one of the actor’s most commercially successful early films and is often cited as a turning point that showcased his comedic timing opposite an established star.

While Reynolds has since rebuilt his standing in Hollywood with a series of box-office hits and a higher public profile, his comments at TIFF underscored how collaboration with experienced co-stars can influence an actor’s trajectory. He framed his relationship with Bullock as an example of learning through partnership rather than an attempt to position himself as the sole creative force on a project.

Reynolds’s appearance at TIFF is part of the festival’s broader programming this year, which included conversations with several filmmakers and actors reflecting on career highs and lows. His remarks about Bullock and the "actor jail" period add a personal note to ongoing discussions about career resilience in an industry where a handful of misfires can affect public perception and future opportunities.
