The United Kingdom is experiencing a heatwave, with temperatures predicted to reach highs of 29C (84.2F) at the Royal Ascot racing festival. The UK Health and Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat health alerts for southern England, forecasting the warm weather to persist until the following Thursday.
The Met Office stated there is a 40% chance of surpassing the highest recorded June temperature of 35.6C (96.1F), a record set in London in 1957 and Southampton in 1976. Despite the heat, attendees at Royal Ascot, a highlight of the racing calendar known for its fashion, continued to uphold sartorial standards.
Guests showcased bright, summery ensembles, with many seen using colorful fans and drinking water from hydration stations to stay cool. The event's official lookbook for the year was curated by menswear specialist Daniel Fletcher, who designated bright tomato as the color of the year.
The festival, founded by Queen Anne in 1711, is a significant social event. Day four of the event saw a mix of celebrities and royals in attendance. Hollywood actor Stanley Tucci arrived with his wife, Felicity Blunt, both dressed formally. The Earl of Snowdon, David Armstrong-Jones, attended with his girlfriend, art dealer Isabelle de La Bruyere, who rode in the royal carriage procession for the first time.
Other notable attendees included Princess Anne, her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and Zara Tindall. Princess Zahra Aga Khan was also present, daughter of the late Aga Khan, owner of the legendary racehorse Shergar, who was kidnapped and killed in 1983.
Fashion choices included sleeveless dresses and airy skirts, reflecting the warm conditions. Many attendees opted for vibrant colors and eye-catching headwear. However, specific rules apply to the Royal Enclosure, where hats or fascinators must have a solid base of four inches in diameter, and novelty hats are not permitted. Amidst the high temperatures, some attendees were seen opting for water over traditional champagne, prioritizing hydration. Anouszka Dabrowa, 23, sported a Suzannah London dress for the event. Sarah Soulsby wore a bright Tomasz Starzewski design, while athlete Jennifer Pacey was seen in a Veni Infantino frock. Other guests included Christina Gore, Flora Gibbs, and Ferne McCann, who chose a bright pink Rebecca Vallance dress. Television presenter Charlotte Hawkins opted for an all-blue ensemble. Milliner Rachel Ellis-Oates displayed one of her creations, and Charlotte Bell wore a polka dot dress. Sofie Bell chose a white dress and headpiece, while Claire Frank donned a design by her goddaughter, Elyse Thomas. Amelia Hutchins wore a light pink dress and bag, and Rosie Turner was seen in a multi-coloured dress from Suzannah London. Sophie Richardson wore a satin Forever New dress, and Amy Blake paired a Sezanne dress with nude heels.
