A sequel to the 1997 cult comedy Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is officially in development, with original stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino slated to return. The announcement has led to a retrospective on the film's cast and their varied career paths since the movie's release.
Work has begun on the highly anticipated follow-up, with Kudrow and Sorvino sharing a photo from the set. If released in 2027, the sequel would coincide with the characters' 40th high school reunion. The original film, which starred Kudrow as Michele Weinberger and Sorvino as Romy White, followed two aspiring fashion designers who attend their high school reunion posing as successful businesswomen.
Where the Cast Is Now
Lisa Kudrow achieved widespread fame for her role as Phoebe Buffay in the sitcom Friends from 1995 to 2004. She has since appeared in the HBO series The Comeback and films such as P.S. I Love You and Easy A. Kudrow and her Friends co-stars reportedly still earn $20 million annually in residuals from the show's syndication. She confirmed the sequel is in the works, stating that the script is "really good."
Mira Sorvino, who played Romy, has continued to have a successful acting career with roles in films like The Free State of Jones and the Netflix series Lady Dynamite. Her performance in Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite earned her an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. Sorvino has also spoken out about her experience being allegedly blacklisted by Harvey Weinstein after rejecting his sexual advances. She has since become a UN Goodwill Ambassador in Human Trafficking.
Mia Cottet, who portrayed high school elite Cheryl, has transitioned to a career in real estate and is listed as an agent at Sotheby's.
Janeane Garofalo, who played Heather Mooney, has largely focused on stand-up comedy. Garofalo was considered for the role of Phoebe Buffay in Friends but ultimately passed on it. She publicly came out as asexual in 2019.
Alan Cumming, who played Sandy Frink, has had a diverse career including roles in the James Bond franchise as Boris Grishenko and as Nightcrawler in X2. He also hosted the reality competition series The Traitors US and recently hosted the BAFTAs, an experience he stated he would not repeat.
Justin Theroux, who had a small role as Clarence the Cowboy, has since appeared in films such as Miami Vice and The Devil Wears Prada 2. He was married to Jennifer Aniston from 2015 to 2018 and recently welcomed his first child with his wife Nicole Brydon Bloom.
Julia Campbell, who played the mean girl Christie Masters, has continued to act in television shows like Dexter and Still Standing. She is married to actor Jay Karnes and has two children.
Elaine Hendrix, who played Lisa, is widely recognized for her role as Meredith Blake in the 1998 film The Parent Trap. She also starred as Alexis Colby in the Dynasty reboot and competed on Dancing With The Stars.
Vincent Ventresca, who played Romy's love interest Billy Christianson, later appeared as Fun Bobby in Friends.
The new film will be directed by Tim Federle, with Robin Schiff, the creator and writer of the original film, penning the script. Several other cast members and original crew members, including costume designer Mona May, are also returning for the sequel.
