Rocky Carroll, known for his role as NCIS Director Leon Vance, was recently celebrated on his 63rd birthday, igniting renewed fan speculation about his character's potential return to the CBS procedural. The official NCIS social media accounts shared behind-the-scenes photos and a birthday message for Carroll on July 8, prompting a wave of fan comments.
Viewers expressed their continued affection for Carroll and voiced hopes for Vance's comeback, even with the character officially killed off. Fans shared birthday wishes and noted their desire to see him back on screen, with some commenting on his absence from the show.
Carroll concluded his nearly two-decade tenure as Director Vance during the show's 23rd season. Despite Vance's death, the series has previously incorporated departed characters through flashbacks and dream sequences, leading fans to wonder if Vance could reappear.
Carroll himself has indicated that his involvement with the NCIS franchise is ongoing. In March, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he would return to direct episodes in the upcoming season, despite his character's on-screen demise. He also suggested the possibility of returning as a "ghost star," appearing as an apparition or spirit, or in flashbacks, which he noted have been significant in past storylines.
"Oh, that remains to be seen," Carroll said regarding a potential on-screen return. "Not only will I still watch the show; I’ll still be part of it. I’ve been asked to come back and direct next season, even though my character is dead. But we also have coined the term ‘ghost stars.’ We have more characters who have been killed off who come back as apparitions and spirits. And we do flashbacks, where people who have died long ago are very significant. So I wouldn’t be surprised [if] Vance might be more prevalent dead than he was when he was alive."
Whether Vance reappears as a "ghost star," in flashbacks, or Carroll's connection to the show remains behind the camera, his relationship with NCIS appears to be continuing. The fan response to his birthday tribute suggests a strong willingness for his return in various capacities.
