Robert Irwin provided a moment of quintessentially Australian charm during a recent public appearance in London, sharing a casual exchange with Prince William that quickly gained attention online. The wildlife conservationist and the Prince of Wales were filmed stepping off a specially branded electric double-decker bus before Irwin turned to William and said, "Yeah, no worries."
The interaction occurred as Irwin represented Australia at Prince William's Earthshot Prize Impact Assembly, held at London's historic Guildhall. The Prince of Wales traveled to the venue on an electric bus marked with the route number "2030," signifying the 3,000th electric bus to join the Transport for London fleet.
Earthshot Prize Initiative
Irwin and Prince William, alongside two young environmental campaigners, delivered a keynote address celebrating the progress of the Earthshot Prize. Founded in 2020, the initiative awards £5 million annually to innovators developing solutions for climate change and environmental challenges, while also offering mentorship and global support.
Prince William expressed optimism about the world's environmental future, stating, "Solutions are working. Capital is moving. Policy is shifting. Partnerships are forming." He emphasized that the growing evidence of progress, rather than a diminishing challenge, fuels his hope.
Robert Irwin, a prominent figure in global conservation, praised Prince William's dedication. "I'm always reminded of his leadership and his authentic passion," Irwin said. "The Earthshot Prize would not be the success that it is without someone at the helm who really cares, and that is him."
Irwin, who has attended previous Earthshot Prize events, noted William's consistent commitment over the years. "He's been doing this for a very long time, and I really think that he's seen firsthand what it is that the world needs," Irwin commented. "I think it's just fantastic that he uses his platform to unite people."
Future Events and Environmental Concerns
Robert Irwin confirmed his attendance at the sixth annual Earthshot Prize ceremony in Mumbai later this year. He also expressed a desire for Australia to host the prestigious event before its conclusion in 2030, stating, "I would love Australia. I hope so. I have all of my fingers crossed."
Speaking amidst a heatwave in London, Irwin highlighted the urgency of environmental work. "It's a reminder of what we're here for, isn't it?" he remarked. He reflected on the event's focus on solutions, adding, "When you're working with the Earthshot Prize, something that is literally centered around solutions, instead of focusing on everything going wrong, let's reward those that are making it right."
Irwin's trip to the UK meant his absence from the Logie Awards nominations announcement in Sydney. Separately, his "I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!" co-host Julia Morris attended the nominations event with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of Irwin, who, along with Morris, received a Gold Logie nomination for their work on the show.
