Rick Hoffman says the cancellation of Suits LA settled the chatter around a Louis Litt spinoff, and he does not expect to revisit the character in a new project for now. The New York native, 55, spent nine seasons as Louis Litt on Suits before the USA Network series ended in 2019. Six years later, fans briefly revived the Litt storyline with Suits LA, but NBCUPlay later canceled the spin-off after a single season due to low ratings. Hoffman spoke about the decision while promoting his new film London Calling.
In reflecting on Suits LA and its quick end, Hoffman said the one-season run and its cancellation are an example of how television often unfolds. He noted that while stepping back into Louis Litt’s shoes during the series finale of Suits LA felt natural, the landscape of the business influenced the outcome and the likelihood of further Litt-centric projects. “There was never a no to the character,” he suggested, but added that the ship seems to have sailed for now after a long nine-year arc with the show. Hoffman credited the experience as transformative for his career and acknowledged fans’ desire for more Litt on screen.
Hoffman has since shifted his focus to film work, most notably starring in the action comedy London Calling as crime boss Benson, opposite Josh Duhamel and Jeremy Ray Taylor. He described London Calling as a project that fused action with comedy and allowed him to explore a different energy after his TV run. The shoot came together “literally right after the strike,” he recalled, with Cape Town serving as the backdrop for the film. Hoffman said he was drawn to the opportunity to work with Duhamel again and to join a project that offered both excitement and humor. He emphasized the experience of filming abroad and the chance to engage with a global production as a refreshing change from television work.
As Hoffman looks ahead, he acknowledged the shifting dynamics of the entertainment industry. He observed a heightened emphasis on the quality of projects and noted that securing roles is more competitive than before. “It’s been an interesting adjustment in the sense of the quality of projects,” he said. “Right now, everybody’s fighting for the quality. It’s not as easy to just jump on something fun and great.” He added that he is grateful to still have opportunities and hopes the landscape will eventually offer more consistent options for the industry as a whole.
Hoffman also shared a lighter moment from his Suits days that underscores his long-running connection to sports culture on set. He recalled being the cast member who knew the most about sports, including his enthusiasm for former NBA star Charles Barkley, who guest-starred on Suits during Season 5. Hoffman said his teammates Meghan Markle and Sarah Rafferty once coordinated a FaceTime call with Barkley because they knew how heartbroken he was about Barkley’s appearance and his sports trivia. Barkley’s cameo led to a real-life connection, and Hoffman said they ultimately met when Barkley invited him to visit Atlanta; the two reportedly became friends. The veteran actor noted that the bonding over sports was a rarity on sets and a cherished memory from the Suits era.
Two more notes from Hoffman’s current trajectory: he is invested in London Calling and remains open to future acting opportunities, including revisiting Louis Litt if the right project ever materializes. He stressed that his decision to pursue diverse roles reflects a broader industry reality where actors must balance creative fulfillment with practical considerations. While he expressed interest in revisiting Litt someday, he also tempered expectations by noting that conversations about such a project would require a broad alignment of creative and financial factors. “I’m hopeful that it will somehow circle back where there’s a little bit more out there for everyone,” he said, signaling a pragmatic optimism about the evolving industry.
Looking back at Suits and forward to London Calling, Hoffman remains grateful for the opportunities that the law firm world opened up for him and for the chance to evolve as an actor in a rapidly changing business. He emphasized the importance of pursuing projects that balance ambition with quality, both for his own career satisfaction and for the broader health of the entertainment ecosystem. As the culture and entertainment landscape continues to shift, Hoffman’s vantage point—rooted in a long-running, beloved series and a new, ambitious film—offers a window into how a seasoned actor navigates continuity, change, and reinvention in Hollywood.
