Actor Richard E. Grant has shared the profound joy of becoming a grandfather, an experience that has brought him a renewed appreciation for life and a lesson in not wasting time, particularly after the death of his wife, Joan.
In June, Grant, 69, announced that his daughter Olivia had given birth to a baby boy. He has since reflected on the "incredible" happiness this new role has brought, contrasting it with the grief he experienced after losing his wife.
"A grandchild underlines your own mortality but that's a good thing because you don't waste time on stuff," Grant told The Sunday Times Style Magazine. "You have a finite amount of time ahead of you."
Grant's wife, Joan Washington, died in September 2021 at the age of 74 after a battle with lung cancer. He has spoken candidly about his grief, sharing that he still writes to her each evening.
He described the birth of his grandson as a powerful reminder of the cycle of life, stating, "You've gone through death and now there's a birth." He also noted the practicalities, humorously admitting that he is spared the majority of the demanding tasks of new parenthood, as his daughter and her husband handle the night feeds and nappy changes.
"I get the best of it," he said. "I've felt that overwhelming thing that you're part of the cycle of life."
Grant's daughter Olivia and her husband, Florian Wirst, moved in with him following Joan's death. He called seeing Olivia become a mother "the most fulfilling thing," though he admitted it has been difficult to comprehend that his wife will never hold their grandson.
Grant announced his grandfatherhood in an emotional video shared on Instagram in June. Filmed while he waited for Olivia to give birth, the clip captured his gratitude for the newborn's safe arrival, calling it "truly miraculous."
Richard and Joan, a dialect coach, met in 1982 and married in 1986. They navigated personal heartbreak, including the loss of their first child shortly after birth and multiple miscarriages, before Olivia's arrival completed their family. When Joan died, Grant announced her passing with a video of them dancing, a testament to their enduring love. He has continued to speak openly about his grief and his ongoing, silent conversation with his late wife.
