Reese Witherspoon opened up about the lasting impact of an abusive relationship she left years ago, saying she had to rewire her brain after the partnership diminished her spirit. Speaking on the New York Times podcast The Interview on Saturday, the Morning Show star described how she didn't initially recognize the unhealthy dynamics and what it took to reconstruct her sense of self.

She said that in some relationships the dynamics aren’t obvious at first, and after exiting the partnership it took time to rebuild her self-esteem. She said her spirit was diminished by believing hurtful things said about her, and that she had to rewire her brain. She also recalled that, even after the relationship ended, she remained insecure for a long time as she navigated life in the public eye.

She has also discussed the moment she left in a 2018 interview with O Magazine, describing that a line was crossed and her brain switched — a turning point she says fundamentally changed who she was on a cellular level and enabled her to stand up for herself.

Witherspoon's dating and marriage history includes a long marriage to Jim Toth from 2011 to 2023, during which they welcomed son Tennessee. She also shares daughter Ava and son Deacon with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe, whom she was married to from 1999 to 2007. She is currently dating German financier Oliver Haarmann.

She has emphasized the challenges of maintaining privacy as a high-profile figure and said she has become a different person who is more comfortable owning her ambition.
