Reese Witherspoon said she was “so excited” for Taylor Swift after the singer’s engagement to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, speaking about the news on the red carpet at the New York premiere of Apple TV+'s The Morning Show.
When asked by Access Hollywood on Tuesday, Witherspoon said, "Yes, I'm so excited for her. Everybody loves a love story," and added that the public response reflected having watched Swift "grow up and change and stand up for themselves and grow into this beautiful relationship." The actress has commented on Swift’s engagement previously in August, posting a selfie-style Instagram Story in which she ogled Swift’s ring and mouthed, "Oh my God."
Witherspoon and Swift share a tangential connection: both have been linked to actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Witherspoon dated Gyllenhaal from approximately 2007 to 2009, and Swift was publicly linked to him in 2010.
Swift and Kelce, who announced their engagement Aug. 26 in a joint Instagram post, wrote, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married." The post included multiple photos of the couple embracing and displaying Swift’s ring and came after two years of dating. In interviews and social-media comments since the announcement, friends and family members of both have signaled support for the couple.
People magazine reported on a cover story that the couple plans a private ceremony rather than a large-scale Hollywood wedding, quoting a source who said they "want to keep it more private" and that "it will definitely be a private affair and not a spectacle." The source added that the pair maintain a close circle of friends and intend to respect their privacy.
A separate report in the Daily Mail cited an exclusive source saying the ceremony could take place at Swift’s Rhode Island oceanfront estate in Watch Hill, the property where she has hosted high-profile Fourth of July gatherings in previous years. The Daily Mail account characterized the plan as preliminary and sourced to individuals close to the couple.
Members of Kelce’s family have publicly celebrated the engagement. Kylie Kelce, the wife of Travis’s brother Jason Kelce, told Good Morning America that her daughters were "thrilled" and called Swift "another aunt," while other family members told People they were pleased with Swift’s apparent rapport with the extended family.
Witherspoon, an Oscar-winning actress and producer who stars in The Morning Show, has periodically commented on Swift’s career milestones and personal life on social media and in brief interviews. Her latest remarks at the premiere followed the pattern of celebrity reactions that have punctuated the public rollout of Swift and Kelce’s relationship and subsequent engagement.
Neither Swift nor Kelce has publicly detailed plans beyond the engagement announcement. Representatives for Swift, Kelce and Witherspoon did not immediately respond to requests for further comment.
The public interest in the couple’s relationship has been amplified by Swift’s long-standing celebrity profile and Kelce’s high NFL profile. Media coverage since the announcement has ranged from accounts of family reactions and speculation about ceremony logistics to coverage of fan responses, with many reports emphasizing the couple’s stated desire for privacy regarding their wedding plans.
