Artist Raymond Pettibon, a seminal figure in the Los Angeles punk scene and a celebrated contemporary artist, was honored at an exclusive exhibition and intimate dinner hosted by Sotheby's at Marea in Beverly Hills on Thursday. The event marked the launch of LITO Editions’ Raymond Pettibon Collection and also featured works by artists Oscar Murillo, Kehinde Wiley, and Peter Halley.
Pettibon, originally from Hermosa Beach, gained prominence in the 1980s by creating iconic album covers and flyers for bands on SST Records, the independent label founded by his brother, Greg Ginn. His distinctive artwork, often characterized by its raw energy and provocative imagery, adorned album covers for groups such as Black Flag and Sonic Youth.
Over time, Pettibon transitioned from his roots in the counterculture art scene to become a blue-chip artist with his work exhibited in major institutions like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His piece "No Title (Let him come…)" achieved a notable sale of $3.4 million at auction in 2021.
The celebratory event brought together a diverse group of collectors, Hollywood creatives, and cultural figures, including Atarah Valentine, Alexandra Meyers, Ashley Hansen, Kyle Boulia, Max Michael, Tim Blum, Adam and Emma Zhu, Kevin and Sue Wall, Alexis Woodall, Seanne Winslow, Constanze Nogler, and Heather McDonald. Attendees celebrated Pettibon's significant contributions to both the music and fine art worlds, with reports indicating that the gathering continued at Marea after regular hours.
