Netflix's Western drama "Ransom Canyon" is already in the writers' room for its third season, with creator April Blair offering insights into the show's romantic entanglements, cast changes, and upcoming plot developments.

Blair confirmed that the core couple Quinn and Staten received a "happy ending" in Season 2, a decision she felt was earned after years of longing and separation depicted in the first season. "It felt like at this point in their story they deserved a little bit of a change; they deserved a little bit of a happiness," Blair told Decider. While their storyline has reached a more settled point, she indicated that new challenges will arise from them living together. "Falling in love is the easy part. You realize. And then once you’re together, it’s all the hurdles and bumps in the road that come with that."

Exploring a Controversial Love Triangle

A significant storyline in Season 2 involved the unexpected pairing of Lauren and Kit, Lauren's boyfriend Lucas's older brother. Blair acknowledged the debate this sparked, both in the writers' room and among viewers. "It was definitely 50/50 in the writers’ room. Half were like, ‘We’ve got to do it, that’s who I’m rooting for!’" she said. The chemistry between the actors led the writers to explore the connection, which Blair believes resonated with audiences.

Despite the deviation, Blair views Lauren and Lucas as "meant to be" and their "endgame." She likened their current situation to Quinn and Staten's past, suggesting they need to experience other relationships and growth before potentially reuniting. "I think they are fated. They’re each other’s North Star. But I think they need to live a little first."

Character Arcs and Departures

Lucas is set to enter his "Me Era" in Season 3, focusing on personal growth and self-discovery after a period of being a "pleaser." Meanwhile, the whereabouts of Sidney, who remains at large, continue to pose a potential threat and influence Yancy and Ellie's relationship. Yancy's primary objective in Season 3 will be to win back his family, navigating the complex emotional landscape with Ellie and the presence of Kai, a figure from Ellie's past.

Blair also addressed the departures of actors Eoin Macken (Davis) and Andrew Liner (Reid), attributing it to narrative choices. She explained that trying to make Davis both an antagonist and a viable love interest for Quinn proved difficult, as audiences were unlikely to root for a character causing harm. The show aimed to give Quinn a more challenging choice with the introduction of Oliver.

Music and Future Storylines

Music remains a key element for "Ransom Canyon," with Season 2 featuring a music festival with appearances by country stars Thomas Rhett and Jordan Davis. Blair highlighted the charity aspect of their involvement, supporting the concept of preserving small towns. For Season 3, the show plans to integrate music further, potentially introducing a new country music singer character.

Looking ahead, Blair teased the return of an important character from Lucas and Kit's past. The show also intends to continue building out the backstories of its established characters, similar to how Quinn's mother and Staten's father were explored in Season 2. The series will continue with eight-episode seasons, a format Blair finds effective for maintaining narrative momentum without lulls.

Ransom Canyon Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
