Randy Quaid has publicly criticized the casting of Anne Hathaway in the upcoming "Days of Thunder" sequel, a project recently announced by Tom Cruise. Quaid, who appeared alongside Cruise in the original 1990 film, expressed his disapproval in a statement to Fox News Digital, labeling Hathaway a "a leftist, woke, horrible choice" to replace Nicole Kidman.
Quaid suggested that the original film's director, Tony Scott, would not have considered Hathaway for the role. "Tony was all about making well-made films with great actors who had sex appeal. A high-octane woman was Tony’s thing," Quaid stated. He further contended that Hathaway would not be able to deliver the required performance for the film, which centers on NASCAR.
In his social media posts, Quaid also argued that the sequel's audience, which he described as "MAGA," would not connect with Hathaway's perceived political stance. He suggested that Nicole Kidman, who portrayed a neurosurgeon and love interest to Cruise's character in the original, should have been cast. "You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking," Quaid said.
Quaid's comments were met with mixed reactions from online users. Some users agreed with his assessment, while others criticized him for bringing politics into casting decisions. One user commented, "What made the last film so great was that it transcended stupid politics you are trying to bring into this."
Hathaway is reportedly set to play a team owner in the new Paramount film. Representatives for Hathaway and Cruise did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.
