Rainn Wilson, the actor best known for his role on the U.S. version of The Office, urged compassion and condemned political violence in a video posted to his Instagram account over the weekend following the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk.

In the video, Wilson said, "These are really dangerous, tragic times," and described the episode as an "assassination-slash-murder." He said he did not always agree with Kirk but called outright threats and violence "disgusting and dangerous," offering sympathy to Kirk's family and supporters. "He was a courageous man, actually," Wilson said, adding that Kirk often entered hostile environments to speak his views and asking, "How many of us have that same courage?" He urged viewers not only to lower the temperature of public discourse in the short term but "to go deeper than that," calling for people to build "bridges of love and unity" even with those they disagree with and referencing scholar Arthur Brooks's admonition to learn how to disagree better.

Kirk was shot and killed on Sept. 10 during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. His death was publicly announced later that day by former President Donald Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Days after the killing, Utah authorities detained a suspect. Prosecutors have charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder, obstruction of justice and discharge of a weapon causing serious bodily injury, according to The Associated Press. Robinson remains in custody.

Wilson's comments came as reactions to the killing unfolded across political and cultural spheres. He spoke directly to his followers about the personal and civic stakes of political disagreement, saying sentiment to "bring the temperature down" must be paired with active efforts to build understanding between ideological opponents. He invoked the risk that willingness to resort to violence poses to democratic life and public safety.

Wilson has previously engaged in public discourse on politics and social issues, and his Instagram message echoed broader calls from public figures on both the left and the right to limit inflammatory rhetoric and to pursue nonviolent dialogue. Media coverage of the shooting has noted the polarized climate in which public figures frequently face hostile exchanges, and authorities have emphasized the criminal investigation into the attack.

Court proceedings in the case are pending, and Utah officials have said the investigation is ongoing. Wilson's plea for empathy and bridge-building, delivered in the wake of a high-profile killing, adds to an unfolding public conversation about how society responds to political violence and how to address deepening ideological divides.
