Prunella Scales, known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in the BBC sitcom "Fawlty Towers," left an estate valued at over £3.1 million. Scales died peacefully at age 93 in October at her home in southwest London, having lived with vascular dementia.
Probate records indicate that Scales's gross estate was valued at £3,376,585, which was reduced to a net estate of £3,166,554 after liabilities. The bulk of her estate has been placed in trust for her family.
Scales, who was appointed a CBE in 1992 for her contributions to theatre, was married to actor Timothy West for 61 years. West passed away in November 2024.
Her character Sybil Fawlty, the wife of the chaotic hotelier Basil Fawlty, was a memorable presence in the 12 episodes of "Fawlty Towers" that aired between 1975 and 1979. Beyond her iconic role, Scales was recognized for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett's "A Question of Attribution" in 1991, a performance later adapted for television and honored with a BAFTA. She also appeared with West in the Channel 4 series "Great Canal Journeys" from 2014 to 2019.
Scales's health declined due to her dementia, leading her to retire after ten series. Her husband, Timothy West, noted in his memoir that early signs of her illness were evident during a 2003 production, where she experienced difficulties with her lines.
Her will, established in October 2020, included specific bequests to several charities. The Snipe Charitable Trust, which supports arts education and training for young people, received £10,000. The Combined Theatrical Charities Appeal of the Council for the King George V Fund for Actors was left £5,000, while the Royal Horticultural Society and the Campaign to Protect Rural England each received £1,000. Additionally, £2,000 was designated for each of her two god-daughters. Her trustees were also instructed to distribute her personal possessions according to any separate memorandum she might have left.
The remainder of her estate was to be divided, with 40% each going to her sons, Sam and Joseph. Her step-daughter, Juliet, received the remaining 20%. A codicil added to her will in 2024 stipulated that these inheritances could be adjusted based on lifetime gifts from Scales or West, specifically referencing a £300,000 sum given to Sam for home renovations.
Timothy West, known for roles in "Coronation Street," "EastEnders," and "Brass," had a distinguished career in television and film. Probate records from June of the previous year indicated that West left a net estate of £109,892. This figure likely did not include jointly owned assets with Scales, such as their home, which would have automatically transferred to her upon his death. His will had allocated £60,000 to charities and £20,000 to his sister, with the remaining assets passing to Prunella.
Prunella Scales was born in Surrey in 1932. Her early career included stage work, beginning with a debut at the Bristol Old Vic in 1951 and a television debut in 1952. She met Timothy West in 1961. Other notable roles included the BBC series "Marriage Lines" and appearances in films such as "Howards End" and "An Awfully Big Adventure." She also gained recognition for her role as Dottie in a series of television advertisements.
