Prunella Scales, the acclaimed actress best known for her role as Sybil Fawlty in the BBC sitcom "Fawlty Towers," left an estate valued at over £3.1 million. Scales died peacefully last October at the age of 93 from vascular dementia.

Probate records indicate that Scales' assets were worth £3,376,585 in the UK, with the net estate totaling £3,166,554 after liabilities. The majority of her estate has been placed in trust for her family. She had been appointed a CBE in 1992 for her contributions to theatre.

Scales was married to actor Timothy West for 61 years until his death in November 2024. Her portrayal of the sharp-tongued Sybil Fawlty, wife to John Cleese's Basil Fawlty, in the 12 episodes of "Fawlty Towers" first aired between 1975 and 1979, remains a memorable performance. She also received acclaim for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett's "A Question of Attribution" in 1991, a performance that earned a BAFTA award for best single drama.

Scales and West shared a love for narrowboat journeys, documented in Channel 4's "Great Canal Journeys" from 2014 to 2019. Her health declined due to vascular dementia, which eventually led her to stop acting. Her husband noted in his book that signs of her illness were present years earlier, including forgotten lines during a 2003 theatre production.

The actress's will, dated October 2020, included several charitable bequests: £10,000 to the Snipe Charitable Trust, £5,000 to the Combined Theatrical Charities Appeal, and £1,000 each to the Royal Horticultural Society and the Campaign to Protect Rural England. Additionally, she left £2,000 to each of her two god-daughters.

Her will stipulated that the remainder of her estate be held in trust, with 40% shares allocated to each of her sons, Sam and Joseph. Her step-daughter, Juliet, received the remaining 20%. A codicil added in 2024 indicated that these distributions could be reduced if the beneficiaries had received lifetime gifts, specifically mentioning a £300,000 sum given to Sam for home renovation.

Timothy West, also a celebrated actor known for roles in "Coronation Street," "EastEnders," and "Brass," died at age 90. His net estate was reported as £109,892. It is noted that jointly owned assets, potentially including their home, would have passed to Scales automatically upon his death, not being included in his individual estate value.

Scales, born in Surrey in 1932, began her acting career after winning a scholarship to the Old Vic school in 1949. Her professional debut was at the Bristol Old Vic in 1951, and her television debut occurred in 1952. She met Timothy West in 1961 while working on a television play.
