The Princess of Wales joined a Mexican wave from the stands and later made a surprise visit to the Australian locker room after England defeated Australia 47-7 in a Women's Rugby World Cup group-stage match at the Brighton & Hove Albion Stadium on Saturday.

Seated among the crowd as patron of the Rugby Football Union, Catherine was seen smiling, clapping and rising in time with other fans during the wave. Video shared by the Australian team on social media showed the princess entering the visiting team's dressing area after the game, shaking hands and offering words of encouragement.

Speaking to members of the Wallaroos, Catherine asked how it had felt to play away from home and told the players, "You played really well, you gave us a run for our money at the beginning, it was nerve-racking!" She added, "For women's sport across the world, it's so fantastic to see crowds like this and stadiums like this. I am a massive supporter of women's sport, so well done — and good luck for the rest of the tournament." The Australian squad responded warmly, breaking into an impromptu three cheers for the princess.

The appearance was one of the first public sporting engagements for the princess since the couple returned from their summer break. Prince William attended Wales' match in Exeter on Saturday, where he watched his nation narrowly lose to Fiji, leaving the couple with divided sporting loyalties for the weekend.

Catherine took over the Rugby Football Union patronage in 2022. She has long been associated with sport in public life, holding patronages including the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and regularly attending Wimbledon. Members of the royal family, including the princess and the prince, have recently posted personal messages to competing teams ahead of the World Cup; Catherine wrote she looked forward to "cheering you on and seeing the team rise to the challenge on home soil." William posted a good-luck message to Wales in Welsh and English.

The match in Brighton marked the final game of the group stage for both teams, with England sitting atop the group after the win. The gathering at the stadium came amid a period of official mourning for the royal family following the death of the Duchess of Kent. The Prince and Princess of Wales issued a joint statement expressing condolences to the duke and his family.

Catherine's public appearance also followed a joint return to duties with William earlier in the week, when the couple visited the Natural History Museum in London. Observers have noted the princess' continued support for women’s sport and her visible enthusiasm during events, a trait reflected in her interactions with players and fans at the stadium.

Representatives for the Rugby Football Union did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Video and photographs of the princess' participation in the crowd and her visit to the Australian locker room circulated on social media and were picked up by team accounts, drawing attention to the growing profile of the Women's Rugby World Cup and the public backing from royal patrons.
