Prince Harry marked his 41st birthday on Monday after returning to the United States following a four-day solo trip to the United Kingdom and a brief visit to Kyiv.
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, posted on the As Ever lifestyle brand’s Instagram account to mark his arrival, sharing an image of herself pouring rosé with the caption, “When your beau is back in town….” Details of private birthday plans were not disclosed; in recent years the duke has frequently celebrated with his wife, their two children and friends in the U.S.
Harry’s short European trip included charity appearances in London and a face-to-face meeting with his father, King Charles, at Clarence House, where the pair spoke over what was described as a private tea lasting about 55 minutes. It was the first in-person meeting between the two in about 20 months.
From London the duke flew to Poland and then traveled by train to the Ukrainian capital at the invitation of the Ukrainian government as part of his work with the Invictus Games. He arrived days after Kyiv endured what officials said was one of the largest Russian air strikes since the conflict began in February 2022. Harry said he had checked with his wife and with the British government before making the visit.
Harry told the Guardian that his trip to Kyiv and other recent engagements were intended in part to correct what he described as inaccurate reporting and to hold people to account, and that his memoir, Spare, was not written “about revenge” or “dirty laundry.” “My conscience is clear,” he said.
The duke has used his public profile to raise awareness and support for wounded service members through the Invictus Games, and during the Kyiv stop he pledged to do “everything possible” to assist thousands of Ukrainian soldiers and service personnel injured in the conflict.
Meghan remained in the couple’s California home with their two children during Harry’s Europe trip. The duchess and her lifestyle brand shared the Instagram post as the duke returned to the U.S.; the post did not disclose where any birthday events would take place.
Photographs from the visit show Harry departing London earlier in the short trip and arriving in Kyiv, and sources said the duke’s schedule included charity events in the U.K. as well as the private meeting with the monarch. The visit and the meeting with King Charles follow months of strained relations within the royal family and public exchanges surrounding Harry’s disclosures in recent media and his memoir.
His return to the United States closes a brief public trip abroad that placed the duke back in the spotlight for his work with veterans and his family’s ongoing role in public life, while also prompting renewed attention to the state of his relationship with the royal household.
