The mystical Owens sisters, Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman), are once again wielding their magic in "Practical Magic 2," which opened in movie theaters nationwide on Friday, September 11. This sequel arrives nearly three decades after the original 1998 film, itself based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel.
The new installment, directed by Susanne Bier and written by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett, and Kelly Marcel, adapts Hoffman's 2021 novel, "The Book of Magic." The story picks up 25 years after the first film, finding Sally and Gillian confronting a new family crisis that necessitates the use of their powers. Sally is now a mother to two daughters, Kylie (Joey King) and Antonia (Maisie Williams), who begin to uncover their family's magical legacy.
Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing reprise their roles as the eccentric aunts, and the cast also features Lee Pace and Xolo Maridueña. As autumn approaches, the film offers a return to the occult themes of its predecessor.
"Practical Magic 2" is exclusively available in theaters. For those who prefer to wait for a home viewing, the film is expected to become available for digital purchase or rental, and eventually stream on HBO Max. As a Warner Bros. release, it will not be available on Netflix or Disney+ in the near future.
While an official streaming release date for "Practical Magic 2" on HBO Max has not been announced, industry patterns suggest it could arrive on the platform in late November or early December 2026. Warner Bros. theatrical releases have typically become available for digital purchase about a month after their cinema debut and begin streaming on HBO Max roughly two and a half months post-theatrical launch. If "Practical Magic 2" follows this trend, it could be available digitally around mid-October 2026, with a streaming debut on HBO Max in late 2026.
Warner Bros. has varied its release windows for films in the past. It remains possible the studio could expedite the streaming release to coincide with the Halloween season. However, for immediate viewing, catching "Practical Magic 2" in theaters is the only option. The original "Practical Magic" (1998) is currently available to stream on HBO Max for subscribers.
HBO Max offers subscription plans starting at $10.99 per month with ads, while an ad-free experience costs $18.49 per month. Bundled options with Disney+ and Hulu are also available, with a bundle including ads priced at $19.99 per month and an ad-free bundle at $32.99 per month.
