A Sydney woman's custom birthday cake order took a humorous turn when a polite note intended for the bakery was mistakenly incorporated into the cake's icing message. Tash Kessel ordered a cake from The Ice Cream Factory for her brother Brandon's 17th birthday, intending to request a straightforward "Happy Birthday Brandon."

However, during the online order process, Ms. Kessel included a note for the decorator that read: "Please can you write 'Happy Birthday Brandon', thank you so much." This polite addition was interpreted literally by the bakery staff.

Upon collecting the cake, Ms. Kessel discovered the icing bore the full, unedited message: "Happy Birthday Brandon, thank you so much." She recounted the moment of confusion, stating, "I looked at it and I was like, 'Wait, why does it say thank you so much?' The lady who gave it to me was also confused."

According to Ms. Kessel, the bakery employee who handed over the cake "said, 'I was wondering why you wanted it to say that.'" The bakery's interpretation of the note, as explained by Ms. Kessel, was that they "must have gotten confused and written the whole thing."

Ms. Kessel's brother was initially confused by the unusual inscription but found the mistake amusing. "He looked at it and was like, 'Why does it say thank you so much?' and I said, 'Because, like, thank you so much for having a birthday,'" she explained. The family was already aware of the mix-up by the time the cake was presented, leading to laughter during the "Happy Birthday" song.

Despite the comical error, Ms. Kessel expressed satisfaction with the bakery's products, noting that the "cakes are amazing" and that she would order from them again.

The Ice Cream Factory, a Sydney-based establishment with over 28 years of experience, clarified its online ordering system. Owners explained that the form includes a dedicated field for the cake inscription and a separate comments section for special requests like dietary needs or decoration instructions. They suggested that Ms. Kessel could have simply written "thank you" in the comments section if she intended it as a general expression of gratitude.

The Ice Cream Factory said it looked like she wanted to alter the inscription

"There was no need for her to repeat the inscription. Being the polite lady she is, she could have just typed 'thank you' in the comments," they told the Daily Mail. "So it looked like she wanted to alter the inscription field as opposed to saying thank you to us."

The bakery owners found the incident "extremely humorous" and were pleased that Ms. Kessel and her family shared in the amusement. In response to the misunderstanding, the business stated it would implement double-checks of customer comments in the future to prevent similar errors.
