Phoebe Bridgers, former partner of actor Paul Mescal, appears to address their past relationship and Mescal's current girlfriend, Gracie Abrams, in lyrics on her forthcoming third studio album, "Lost Weekend." An early review of the album, published by The Guardian, suggests that Bridgers, 31, explores her two-year romance with Mescal, 30, which ended in 2022. The album reportedly confirms the pair were engaged, with a lyric stating, "I'm supposed to be married but I called it off."
One specific lyric from the track "The Governor's Waltz" has drawn attention, with critics interpreting it as a pointed reference to Abrams. The line reads, "She can pretend to be me. Since she took my place in my bed, on that stage." Abrams, 26, who has previously identified as a fan of Bridgers, began dating Mescal in 2024.
This development follows Abrams' own album, "The Secret of Us," released earlier this year, which also featured lyrical content interpreted as being about her relationship with Mescal and his ex-girlfriend. On the track "Normal Thing," Abrams sings, "When did you slip through my fingers, did I ever have you? Was I just a placeholder to fill the hole inside you? ... Nothing left to say 'cause you're not over her, now, are you?" Another song, "Risk," includes the line, "Know you had a girl, but it didn't work out. Know you bought a house, but you had to move out…"
Mescal, who rose to prominence after the BBC drama "Normal People," began dating Bridgers in 2020. Their relationship concluded in 2022. Shortly after their split, Bridgers was rumored to be in a relationship with comedian Bo Burnham. Mescal, meanwhile, has spoken about his desire for a family, expressing in a September 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, "I would love to have a family. I'm not like, 'I want them tomorrow,' but I would love to have kids."
Mescal has been notably private about his relationship with Abrams. When asked about their public status in a September 2025 interview with Rolling Stone, he stated, "I don't know how to answer that. I actually do have an answer, but everything to do with that is deeply precious to me and I don't want to... This isn't ... I don't really ... umm ... I want to protect those things fundamentally."
Mescal and Abrams, daughter of director J.J. Abrams, were first linked in 2024 and made their red carpet debut in May 2025 at the premiere of "History Of Sound." The couple has since been photographed together at festivals and premieres, and Abrams has been seen wearing a ring on her left-hand ring finger, fueling speculation about their relationship status. Mescal previously commented on the attention in an October interview with GQ, saying, "The speculation has been kind of mad for the last x amount of years. I'm not comfortable inviting any access into that part of my life. How I am in my private life is so precious to me because I get very little of it, and it might be public interest, but it's not public-obligated information."
