Veteran Nine News presenter Peter Overton stepped in to read a portion of a sports bulletin on the 6pm news on July 16, 2026, filling in for regular sports anchor James Bracey due to unexpected technical difficulties.

Overton, who began his broadcasting career as a sports reporter in the 1980s, seamlessly took over the introduction for a sports segment. "I think the rain's gotten into the satellite, so I'm going to do the sport till we get James back on air," Overton announced to viewers before delivering a report on NRL player Jarome Luai.

Following the pre-recorded package, Bracey returned to the broadcast and completed the sports segment. He publicly acknowledged Overton's impromptu contribution, saying, "Pete, great to see you returning to your sports reporting days mate. Top job mate. You still got it."

The TV legend started his career as a sports reporter back in the 1980s

Overton, 60, has been the main presenter for Nine News Sydney since 2009. His early career included roles as a sports reporter at Channel Seven and later as a weekend sports presenter for Channel Nine before he moved to the flagship news reading position.
