Penelope Keith, a celebrated British comic actress renowned for her portrayals of upper-class characters in popular television sitcoms, has died at the age of 86. Her family confirmed her death, stating she passed away at her home in Surrey, near London, following a diagnosis of cancer.
Keith achieved widespread recognition for her roles in the classic British sitcoms "The Good Life" and "To the Manor Born." In "The Good Life," which aired in the 1970s, she played Margo Leadbetter, a suburbanite whose lifestyle clashed with her bohemian neighbors. For this role, she won a BAFTA award in 1977. She later starred as Audrey fforbes-Hamilton in "To the Manor Born," a role she reprised for a special in 2007.
She began her acting career on stage, and in 1963, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. Beyond her sitcom fame, Keith also lent her voice to the children's show "Teletubbies" and appeared in documentary series such as "Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages." She continued performing in stage productions into her 80s.
In 2014, Keith was made a dame, the female equivalent of a knight, in recognition of her contributions to the arts and charity. West End theaters in London are scheduled to dim their lights in tribute to her career.
Penelope Keith is survived by her husband, Rodney Timson, and their two adopted sons.
