Penélope Cruz became visibly emotional, crying uncontrollably during a 15-and-a-half-minute standing ovation for her new film "Bunker" at the 2026 Venice Film Festival. The lengthy applause for the film, which stars Cruz and her husband Javier Bardem, marked the longest ovation of the festival to date. Director Florian Zeller acknowledged the moment, pulling the couple forward to accept the audience's praise.
Bardem offered support to his wife as she was overcome with emotion. Cruz was striking in a custom red Chanel gown for the premiere held at Sala Grande. The ovation for "Bunker" fell just two minutes short of the festival's record, a 17-minute standing ovation for "The Room Next Door" in 2024.
This year's festival has seen several notable ovations. "Wild Horse Nine," starring John Malkovich, received a 13-minute reception, while "Primetime" and Werner Herzog's drama starring Kate and Rooney Mara each garnered seven-minute ovations.
"Bunker" is the ninth film collaboration between Cruz and Bardem. The psychological thriller features the couple as a married pair, Sofia and Miguel. Bardem plays architect Miguel, whose marriage is tested when he takes on a controversial project to build a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire, portrayed by Paul Dano. Cruz's character, Sofia, begins working with an American novelist, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger.
The film is already garnering positive reviews, including a four-star rating from the Daily Mail's Brian Viner.
Cruz and Bardem, married for 16 years and parents to two children, first met in 1992 on the set of "Jamón, Jamón." They began their romantic relationship years later after reuniting for the 2008 film "Vicky Cristina Barcelona."
Bardem has previously spoken about the couple's commitment to family, stating that at least one parent has always been available for their children when taking on acting roles. He has described Cruz as a "blessed" and "amazing, beautiful, good human being" with "no hint of malice."
