Penelope Cruz, Michelle Yeoh, and Helen Mirren were among the luminaries honored at the TIFF Tribute Awards, held during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday.
Cruz, 52, arrived in a plunging black gown accented with a diamond necklace, embodying classic Hollywood glamour. She received the Special Tribute Award for her career achievements. The actress is in Toronto to promote two films that premiered at Cannes: the Spanish epic "La Bola Negra" and Florian Zeller's "Bunker." Cruz described "Bunker" as a film that addresses "shocking inequalities, the individualism, the fear of others, the temptation to retreat into ourselves, and the growing anxiety for the future of our planet." She characterized "La Bola Negra" as a story centered on "humanity" and "empathy," calling it "a love letter to cinema, poetry, and art."
Michele Yeoh, 64, the star of "Everything Everywhere All at Once," appeared in a sparkling off-the-shoulder gown with a front slit. She complemented her attire with gold jewelry.
Helen Mirren, 81, was recognized with the Groundbreaker Award. She appeared in a black blazer and ruffled skirt ensemble, paired with black heels and red lipstick. While accepting her award, Mirren paid tribute to Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem, stating, "It's so hard to change culture, but these two women did that. And I dedicate this Groundbreaking Award to them."
Presenting an award was actress Anna Kendrick, who wore a blue and yellow floral dress. She presented Seth Rogen with the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award. Rogen, 44, humorously remarked on the early timing of a career achievement award, questioning if the festival had some foreknowledge of his health.
The TIFF Tribute Awards are an annual fundraising gala during the Toronto International Film Festival that honors notable achievements in cinema. The recipients are selected in advance by TIFF leadership.
