Penélope Cruz became visibly emotional, crying during a 15-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival premiere of her new film, "Bunker." The lengthy applause, the longest of the festival thus far in 2026, saw Cruz comforted by her husband and co-star, Javier Bardem.

The couple attended the premiere at Sala Grande on Tuesday to promote the psychological thriller, which marks their ninth collaboration on screen. Director Florian Zeller acknowledged the extended reception by bringing Cruz and Bardem forward, with Bardem gesturing to his wife as the audience continued to applaud.

The 15-and-a-half-minute ovation for "Bunker" falls just short of the Venice Film Festival's recent record, which saw a 17-minute ovation for "The Room Next Door" in 2024. This year's festival has also seen other notable ovations, including a 13-minute reception for John Malkovich's film "Wild Horse Nine" and seven-minute ovations for "Primetime" and Werner Herzog's drama.

"Bunker" is already garnering positive reviews, with the Daily Mail's Brian Viner awarding it four stars. The film stars Cruz and Bardem as a married couple, Sofia and Miguel. Miguel, an architect, faces marital strain after accepting a morally ambiguous project to design a survivalist bunker for a tech billionaire, played by Paul Dano. Sofia, meanwhile, begins working with an American novelist, Jeremy Gray, portrayed by Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Cruz and Bardem, who have been married for 16 years and share two children, first met in 1992 on the set of the Spanish film "Jamón, Jamón." They began dating 15 years later after reuniting for the 2008 movie "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Bardem has previously spoken about their commitment to family, stating that they ensure at least one of them is home when taking acting roles, and he has described Cruz as a "blessed" and "amazing, beautiful, good human being."
