Paul Mescal has been spotted filming scenes for an upcoming Beatles biopic series that will depict the first meeting between Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The encounter, which occurred on July 6, 1957, at a church fair in Liverpool, is a pivotal moment in the history of one of music's most celebrated songwriting partnerships.
Mescal, who is cast as McCartney, was seen on set dressed in a blue shirt, grey jacket, and navy trousers. The scene, set at a summer fete, captured the atmosphere of the church grounds with women in period attire and decorative bunting. Vintage cars and more bunting were visible on the road adjacent to the venue, adding to the historical setting.
The Fateful Encounter
The two future Beatles stars met at St Peter's Church in Woolton, where Lennon was performing with his skiffle group, The Quarrymen. After their set, a mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan, introduced them. McCartney reportedly impressed Lennon by playing Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock" on a guitar and correctly tuning it.
Harris Dickinson is cast as John Lennon and was not present on set during the filming of this particular scene. Barry Keoghan will play Ringo Starr and Joseph Quinn will portray George Harrison in the upcoming series.
The series, directed by Sam Mendes, is planned as four installments, each focusing on one of the Beatles members, with a simultaneous release scheduled for next year. Recently, the cast was seen recreating the iconic Abbey Road album cover photoshoot, though the location was reportedly secured after initial concerns about filming permits.
Also seen on set was a replica of John Lennon's distinctive psychedelic Rolls-Royce Phantom V. The car, originally black, was famously repainted in a vibrant yellow with elaborate Romani-inspired designs in 1967. Mal Evans, the Beatles' roadie and former bouncer, played by Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, was also depicted on set. Epstein hired Evans to assist the band, and he became an integral part of their tours and recording sessions.
