Actor Patrick Warburton, widely recognized for his roles as David Puddy on "Seinfeld" and Joe Swanson on "Family Guy," recounted memorable on-set encounters with veteran actresses, including a particularly humorous experience filming romantic scenes with Carol Burnett.
During an appearance on "Nostalgia Tonight with Joe Sibilia," Warburton, then 27, recalled playing a much younger love interest to Burnett, who was in her late 50s at the time. He played a character involved with both the "good twin" and the "evil twin," both portrayed by Burnett. Warburton described Burnett's playful reaction to filming these scenes, noting she would tell the director they needed to "rehearse this some more." He told Sibilia, "For me, it was kind of like kissing mom because I grew up with the family on ‘The Carol Burnett Show.’"
Warburton, now 61, also shared anecdotes about other iconic television figures. He remembered an incident where Betty White, then 94, "rub[bed] my naked chest down in bed in a show." He also recalled an experience with Bea Arthur, describing her as "scary and imposing" yet lovely, sharing that Arthur insisted they have sushi for lunch together when others backed out.
Warburton's career also includes his long-running role as the voice of Joe Swanson on "Family Guy." He previously discussed how his devout Catholic parents disapproved of the animated series, viewing it as "blasphemy." His mother, in particular, made attempts to influence his work and convert his "Seinfeld" co-star Jerry Seinfeld to Catholicism, even leaving him a DVD of religious material.
Warburton described his parents' strong religious convictions and their reactions to his acting career. He recalled his mother asking if he would give a conversion videotape to Jerry Seinfeld and, years later, leaving a DVD for Seinfeld after a stand-up performance. Warburton, who has described himself as a "bad Catholic," acknowledged that his faith has led to moments of discomfort with some of his work, but believes "God has a sense of humor."
