Patricia Heaton, known for her role in "Everybody Loves Raymond," has detailed the circumstances that led her to pursue sobriety. The actress shared that during the COVID-19 pandemic, with her children having left home and without ongoing work, she found herself with unaccustomed free time.
Heaton explained that her alcohol consumption gradually increased during this period. What began as a glass of wine while cooking evolved into drinking wine with dinner, during cleanup, and while watching television. She recalled one evening realizing she had consumed nearly an entire bottle by herself.
This realization prompted Heaton to turn to her faith. She recounted a prayer she made: "God, I think you want me to stop drinking. I would be willing to stop, but you have to make it happen because I can’t. I’m willing, but I’m unable." The following evening, while with her sons and their friends, Heaton experienced a moment that solidified her decision when she struggled to pronounce the word "tradition," attempting it three times unsuccessfully. Her youngest son's observation, "That’s great, Mom. You can’t even speak," was a significant wake-up call.
Heaton described the incident as mortifying and stated, "The next morning I said, ‘Okay, God. Message received.’ That was eight years ago." This moment marked the beginning of her sobriety journey.
Heaton is married to British actor and director David Hunt, and they have four sons: Samuel, John, Joseph, and Daniel.
