Paradise Bakehouse in Bundaberg, Queensland, and Banana Boogie in Belair, South Australia, were named the winners of the Plain Pie and Plain Sausage Roll categories respectively at the 2025 Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

The awards were announced on Sept. 11 at the competition’s prize-giving ceremony, which drew entrants from bakeries across Australia to compete in 15 categories judged by a panel of tasters. Paradise Bakehouse won the premier Plain Pie prize for its mince pie; the runner-up in that category was The Pie Father in Rosebery, New South Wales, also for a mince pie. Banana Boogie received the top Plain Sausage Roll honour for its beef sausage roll.

Other major category winners included Mount Barker Country Bakehouse in Western Australia, which took the Gourmet Pie award for a beef Bourguignon pie, and Samuel Gee’s Pies & Pastries in Balaclava, New South Wales, which won the Gourmet Sausage Roll category with a BBQ Meat Lovers roll. Miami Bakehouse in Greenfields, WA, claimed the Meat Pastie prize. The Pie Father in Rosebery also featured among speciality winners, taking the Gourmet Pork Pie award for an antipasto-style pork pie.

Manufacturing awards went to Baked Provisions, which won the Manufacturing Plain Pie prize for a chunky meat pie sold nationally through IGA and independent supermarkets, and to Caspers Pies and Pastries in Melbourne for the Manufacturing Plain Sausage Roll. Baked Provisions also won Manufacturing Gourmet Pie for a chicken and vegetable offering produced in Prestons, New South Wales.

Several other themed and speciality prizes were handed out: M&D Butchery in Port Cygnet, Tasmania, won the Tom Lindsay Pepper Steak Award; Jack’s Cafe & Bakery in Halls Head, Western Australia, received the John Ross Innovative Pie award for a Beef Wellington pie; Paradise Bakehouse also secured the Apprentice Vegetarian Pie prize with a “Veggie Lover”; Mountain High Pies in Wentworth Falls won the Gourmet Brekkie Pie category for a Big Brekkie Pie; and Hungie Fangs Artisan Bakery in Cobran, Victoria, took the Gourmet Game Pie award.

The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition was established in 1989 and has grown into a national showcase for commercial and artisan pie makers. It offers prizes worth in excess of A$50,000 in cash and products and provides winners with heightened public exposure and local business boosts. Past winners have reported increased customer demand, long queues and customers travelling significant distances to sample award-winning products.

Organisers said the competition aims to recognise a wide range of baking skills and product types, from traditional plain pies and sausage rolls to gluten-free, vegetarian and innovative entries. Categories in 2025 also included gourmet seafood, poultry, pork and slow-cooked barbecue pies, as well as gluten-free and vegetarian options, reflecting growing consumer demand for diverse bakery offerings.

The ceremony and judging are intended to spotlight regional and small-town bakers alongside larger manufacturers, with this year’s winners representing a cross-section of urban and regional businesses from Tasmania to Western Australia. Full results and category listings were published by the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition following the awards.

For many entrants, the recognition can translate into commercial gains, including wider distribution, wholesale opportunities and increased foot traffic. The competition continues to be a focal point of Australia’s bakery industry calendar and a barometer of trends in traditional and contemporary savoury pastry products.
