Newly released backstage footage captured the moment 15-year-old Owen Cooper learned that his Adolescence co-star Stephen Graham had won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor, minutes after Cooper himself made history as the youngest male Emmy winner.

Cooper was being interviewed on the Emmys' YouTube channel when correspondent Albert Lawrence told him, "Stephen just also picked up an award." A surprised Cooper gasped, "Did he?" before turning to his team for confirmation and responding, "Oh my god. Oh, that's brilliant. That's made it even better. Oh, wow."

The exchanges came on a night of major wins for the Netflix limited series. Adolescence collected eight Emmy awards, including acting prizes for Cooper and Erin Doherty and a directing award for Philip Barantini; the show also received pre-telecast honors for cinematography and casting. Graham's Outstanding Lead Actor trophy followed earlier recognition related to the series, bringing his total Emmy count to three for his work on the project as an actor, writer and producer.

Cooper, who plays Jamie Miller in the drama about a schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate after encountering violent online material, accepted his award earlier in the evening and thanked the cast and crew in his speech. "It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people behind the camera and Stephen and all the cast," he told the audience. He added that starting drama classes "a couple years back" had led to unexpected opportunities and urged others to step out of their comfort zones.

The Warrington teenager beat a field of established actors to win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, including Javier Bardem for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, Rob Delaney for Dying for Sex, Peter Sarsgaard and Bill Camp for Presumed Innocent, and his Adolescence co-star Ashley Walters.

Cooper and his family flew to Los Angeles for the ceremony. His parents, Andy and Noreen, and his two brothers were at the event; his headteacher granted him a week off school on the condition he complete homework while in the U.S. Cooper said the time away included an Emmys after-party hosted by the streaming service and that he was due to return to school in Warrington on Wednesday.

Adolescence has become a global conversation starter since its release, averaging roughly 45 million views per month and drawing attention from parents and teenagers for its depiction of online extremism and misogyny intersecting with adolescent life. The series' haul at the Emmys reflects both industry recognition and popular engagement.

The footage of Cooper's reaction highlights the camaraderie within the cast and the unusual moment of shared success on a high-profile awards night. Representatives for the show and the Emmy organisers did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
