Owen Cooper, 15, became the youngest male actor to win a Primetime Emmy Award on Sunday, taking home Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his portrayal of Jamie Miller in Netflix’s four-part drama Adolescence.

The series also won best limited series and prizes for directing and writing as well as acting awards for Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty, making it one of the night’s most celebrated programs. In his acceptance speech, Cooper described the moment as "surreal," saying he had "started these drama classes a couple of years back" and did not expect to be "in the United States, never mind here."

Cooper encouraged others to step outside their comfort zones, adding, "I think tonight proves if you listen, and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything can be possible. I was nothing about three years ago, I'm here now." He thanked his family, castmates and the production team, saying, "It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people behind the camera."

Cooper broke the previous record held by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he won an Emmy in 1973. Roxana Zal remains the youngest acting winner overall; she was 14 when she won in 1984. Cooper’s win drew attention not only for his age but for the rapid arc of his career: Adolescence was his screen debut and the performance helped him land upcoming roles in the 2025 miniseries Film Club and the 2026 film Wuthering Heights.

Adolescence centers on a 13-year-old boy accused of stabbing a classmate and was widely praised for its unflinching look at the impact of smartphones and social media on teenagers. Off-screen, the series catalyzed conversations about boys’ mental health and online radicalization, drawing attention from educators and political leaders. In the U.K., Prime Minister Keir Starmer watched the show with his family and joined a roundtable with the series’ creators and charities to discuss possible policy responses. Netflix also made the series freely available to U.K. classrooms.

The program received 13 Emmy nominations this year and its success at the awards night underscored the industry and public response to its themes. Stephen Graham won best lead actor in a limited series and shared a writing prize; in his remarks he reflected on his upbringing and the unlikely journey from a council flat to an Emmy stage. Erin Doherty won best supporting actress in a limited series and called the production "the definition of a team effort." Co-writer Jack Thorne paid tribute to the series’ young cast.

Other winners at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards included drama series The Pitt, which won best drama and acting prizes for Katherine LaNasa and Noah Wyle; The Studio, which dominated comedy categories and gave its creator-star Seth Rogen a best lead actor award; and Tramell Tillman, who made history as the first Black actor to win best supporting actor in a drama series. Stephen Colbert won outstanding talk series, and the U.S. version of The Traitors won outstanding reality competition programme, with host Alan Cumming acknowledging the show’s international crew.

Earlier in the weekend, actor Jake Gyllenhaal surprised Cooper during an interview after the young actor had described Gyllenhaal as a hero; Gyllenhaal presented Cooper with a small token of luck ahead of the ceremony. Industry observers said the sweep by Adolescence reflected both critical acclaim and the Academy’s recognition of storytelling that examines contemporary digital pressures on youth.

Cooper’s win adds him to a short list of high-profile young award winners across entertainment history, and the attention is likely to amplify both his career opportunities and further discussion of the issues his role helped highlight. He leaves the ceremony urging young people to pursue opportunities and to take risks — a message he said was born of a few years of drama classes that led unexpectedly to an Emmy on the global stage.
