Owen Cooper, 15, who stars in the Netflix limited series Adolescence, on Sunday became the youngest male actor to win a Primetime Emmy, taking the award for outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie.

Cooper accepted the award at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles after playing Jamie Miller, a schoolboy accused of murdering a classmate in the four-part drama. The series also won prizes for best limited series, directing and writing, and acting gongs for co-stars Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty.

Asked whether he would take the statuette into school, Cooper said, "This will get robbed in my school. No chance. I am definitely not taking it to school. No, no, no." He flew to Los Angeles with his parents and their bag of homework after promising teachers he would keep up with studies; he is due to return to his hometown of Warrington, Cheshire, this week to continue studying for his GCSEs.

Though the Emmy marks a dramatic leap in public recognition, Cooper’s parents and neighbours say his life at home has remained modest. Cooper lives with his family in a terraced house in Warrington, reportedly valued at about £135,000. His mother, Noreen, works as a carer and his father, Andy, is employed in IT. Neighbours described Cooper as polite and well-mannered and said the family had not shown outward signs of changed fortunes following the award.

Cooper’s earnings for Adolescence have not been officially disclosed but are reported to be modest for a breakout role; media reports estimate he earned less than £40,000 for the four-part series. Since the show filmed, Cooper has been cast as the young Heathcliff in an upcoming screen adaptation of Wuthering Heights that will feature Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.

Drama MOB, the Manchester school where Cooper trained for two years, praised his progress. Co-director Esther Morgan said she was "massively proud" and described his rise as an example to other northern talent, noting Cooper continued to attend weekly evening classes despite earlier rejections. Coronation Street actor Tina O’Brien is also associated with the school.

Cooper has said he started acting to build confidence rather than as a long-term career plan. He told late-night host Jimmy Kimmel that when not filming he takes a five-minute break to play swingball and then goes straight to tutoring. He described bringing a bag of school books to Los Angeles to keep up with work.

On stage at the Emmys, Cooper acknowledged his training and family in his acceptance speech, saying the experience had been "just so surreal" and that it proved "if you listen, and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life."

The Emmy win set a new record: Cooper, 15, beat the previous youngest male winner, Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he won in 1973. Cooper’s victory came against a field that included established performers; reports noted he beat nominees such as Javier Bardem, Rob Delaney and Peter Sarsgaard.

After the ceremony, Cooper joined colleagues and Netflix executives at the streamer’s after-party, where he posed for photographs with co-creators, cast members and Netflix executives including chief content officer Bela Bajaria and CEO Ted Sarandos.

Adolescence, which has been seen by millions worldwide, follows the Miller family as they grapple with the aftermath of the violent accusation against Jamie and explores themes tied to online influence and youth behaviour. Cooper’s portrayal drew critical attention and helped the series become a focal point of awards season.

Neighbours and local figures celebrated Cooper’s achievement while emphasising his grounded upbringing. June Shingler, who lives nearby, said she was thrilled and did not expect success would change him. Madeline, another neighbour, said she had known Cooper since he was a child and described him as "a lovely boy." Drama MOB staff also highlighted his work ethic and likability.

Cooper is expected to return to school this week to resume GCSE preparation while balancing new professional commitments, including the forthcoming film role.
