The final moments of Netflix’s “Outer Banks” saw the long-awaited wedding of Sarah Cameron, played by Madelyn Cline, and John B. Rutledge, portrayed by Chase Stokes. The series finale, which has drawn significant attention from viewers, depicted the couple exchanging vows with their friends and their son, JJ, present. This conclusion fulfilled a vision held by series creator Jonas Pate, who, according to Stokes, always intended for the show to end with the marriage of the “Pogue prince and Kook princess.”
Cline described the finale as “sweet” and considered the sequence her favorite part of the series to film. “I loved it. That’s why I think it might be my favorite sequence that we shot,” she told Decider.
For Stokes, seeing the wedding come to fruition was a fitting end to the nearly decade-long production. "You know, Jonas Pate, when we started this thing, he said that that’s exactly how it was going to end,” Stokes shared. “So I think in knowing that when we started this, that was how he hoped it to end, that it did go that way, it was a really cool thing. A lot of shows don’t get that opportunity.”
Madison Bailey, who plays Kiara, also expressed satisfaction with the finale, noting that it provided a sense of closure for her character, who was navigating the grief of JJ's death. Bailey highlighted that the wedding scene was the first time the entire cast had gathered for a sequence, contributing to its unique atmosphere.
"We had something that had a lot of people in the courthouse at one point [in another season], but the vibes were angry. Completely different vibes, the vibes were off,” Bailey said, contrasting it with the positive energy of the wedding shoot.
The cast recalled the filming of the wedding scene as a welcome respite from the physically demanding production, which included elements like a hurricane. Stokes humorously mentioned the prolonged dampness experienced during the filming of earlier scenes.
The final season of “Outer Banks” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
