The fifth and final season of Netflix's "Outer Banks" has wrapped up the Pogues' long quest for treasure, with the group ultimately securing the Royal Merchant gold and resolving key character storylines.

The season culminates with the Pogues returning to Kildare after an adventure in Azerbaijan, only to find that the antagonist, Groff, had stolen the gold from Rose Cameron and nearly killed her. In a confrontation during Hurricane Cassandra, Kiara engages Groff on his boat. She manages to entangle him in ropes and, using a knife, cuts the rope holding him above the water, leading to his drowning. Kiara herself faces a near-death experience when she falls into the water while securing the treasure, but John B. and Sarah rescue her. Following the storm, they recover all the gold.

With their newfound wealth, the Pogues achieve a "happily ever after." John B. reclaims his home in Kildare, and he and Sarah welcome a son, whom they name JJ, in honor of their deceased best friend. Pope uses his share of the treasure to help Cleo with her immigration status, and the couple moves into Tannyhill after becoming engaged. Kiara purchases a yacht for her family and pursues her dream of becoming a marine biologist.

The series finale features the wedding of John B. and Sarah Cameron. Series creator Jonas Pate had envisioned this ending from the outset, a fact acknowledged by star Chase Stokes. "So I think in knowing that when we started this, that was how he hoped it to end, that it did go that way, it was a really cool thing," Stokes told Decider. Madelyn Cline echoed this sentiment, calling the finale sequence "sweet" and a personal favorite.

Contrary to some plot points explored in the season, Kiara does not die. While her life is frequently endangered, she survives the events of the final season. Rose Cameron also survives Groff's treachery. The magical artifact known as the Blue Crown, which was part of the quest, does not bring JJ back from the dead; instead, it allows Kiara to see visions of their shared past. The character of JJ is honored through the naming of John B. and Sarah's son.

"Outer Banks" Season 5 is now available for streaming on Netflix.
