Netflix's popular teen adventure series "Outer Banks" has concluded its run after five seasons. The final episodes, released on August 20, 2026, brought the story of the Pogues to a planned close, according to the show's creators.
Creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke had always envisioned the series as a five-season narrative. In a letter to fans in November 2024, they stated their intention to prepare for the final chapter of the "Outer Banks" journey. The fifth season's finale provided closure for the main characters, including a flash-forward depicting John B and Sarah married and starting a family.
Despite the conclusion of the original series, Netflix is reportedly exploring the possibility of expanding the "Outer Banks" universe. A potential prequel series, tentatively titled "Kildare," is in development. This project is also being helmed by the original creators.
However, "Kildare" is still in the early stages of development, and Netflix has not yet officially ordered it to series. Josh Pate has indicated that work on the script is underway. If greenlit, the prequel would be set approximately 20 years before the events of "Outer Banks." It aims to explore the origins of the social and economic divide between the wealthy Kook families and the working-class Pogues that has been a central theme in the original series. The prequel is expected to introduce a new cast of characters rather than featuring the original cast in their established roles.
All five seasons of "Outer Banks" are currently available for streaming on Netflix.
