The cast of the 2005 film "The Family Stone" is set to reunite for a sequel, tentatively titled "Families Stone," with a host of original stars confirmed to return. Searchlight Pictures announced the upcoming project over the weekend, revealing that Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Claire Danes, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider, and Brian J. White will reprise their roles.
Writer and director Thomas Bezucha is also returning to helm the film, with production scheduled to begin in New York this fall. The original movie, released in 2005, centered on Everett Stone (Mulroney) bringing his new girlfriend, Meredith (Parker), home to meet his unconventional family during the holidays. A key plot point in the original film was the revelation that Diane Keaton's character, Sybil Stone, was terminally ill.
The sequel will reportedly pick up 20 years after Sybil Stone's passing, with the Stone family gathering for Christmas again. The central surprise of the new film will be their father, played by Nelson, unexpectedly inviting the woman he has fallen in love with to meet the family.
Bezucha recently shared that Keaton's death in October 2025 profoundly influenced his plans for the sequel. "I've been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already," Bezucha told CNN in November 2025. He added that he has been "spending time in that house where I've been missing her for a while already," aiming to "do a good job by the rest of the cast" and "honor her even more."
Luke Wilson, who read the script by July, described it to Entertainment Tonight as "really funny" and expressed his pleasure that "everybody wants to work together again." Dermot Mulroney also indicated enthusiasm for the project, telling the "Tangle" podcast that "everyone's up for returning."
The announcement has generated excitement online, with many fans eager for more details on the release date. Parker reposted the cast announcement to her Instagram, while Reaser shared the news on her social media story.
