Oprah Winfrey has shared an account of how she allegedly persuaded her talk show audience to keep quiet about Whitney Houston falling off stage during a televised performance, a moment Winfrey believes could have ended the singer's career.

Speaking at Cannes Lions, Winfrey recounted an incident where Houston, who had a history of well-publicized struggles with drug addiction, was not clean when she appeared to perform on The Oprah Winfrey Show. According to Winfrey, Houston fell off the stage, and she intervened by begging the audience, many of whom had cameras, not to release the footage. She stated that the audience complied, preventing a potentially career-ending scandal.

However, representatives for Whitney Houston's estate have disputed Winfrey's assertion. In a statement, the estate claimed that the fall occurred during a sound check and was due to darkness and unfamiliarity with the stage, asserting that Houston was not under the influence at the time. The estate emphasized that while Houston faced personal battles, it is inaccurate to link every incident to her struggles with substance abuse, and she should be remembered as a professional artist.

The incident described by Winfrey reportedly occurred during one of Houston's appearances on the show. Houston performed on The Oprah Winfrey Show multiple times, including in 1998, 1999, and a significant two-part interview in 2009, which was among her last public interviews. During the 2009 interview, Houston disclosed that drug use had been a daily occurrence for her since the mid-1990s, describing her addiction as painful and a means to conceal unhappiness.

Winfrey's show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, ran for 25 seasons from 1986 to 2011, airing 4,561 episodes and remaining the highest-rated daytime talk show in American television history. Houston died on February 11, 2012, at the age of 48, from accidental drowning in a bathtub. Her death followed years of documented battles with substance abuse, including multiple stints in rehab.
