Olu Jacobs, Legendary Nigerian Actor, Dies at 84
The veteran performer, widely regarded as a father figure of Nollywood, had a career spanning over five decades.
Olu Jacobs, one of Nigeria's most recognized actors, has died at the age of 84. His wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, announced his passing, describing the celebrated actor as "The Lion of Lufodo."
Jacobs' career, which spanned more than five decades, included extensive work in theatre, television, and film. He was considered a foundational figure in Nollywood, Nigeria's film industry, earning widespread respect for his commanding screen presence and versatility.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs received training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He later appeared in British television productions and international films before becoming a prominent force in Nigerian cinema. His notable film credits include "My Kingdom," "Covert Operation," and "One Fine Day."
Throughout his career, Jacobs received numerous accolades, including an African Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and several lifetime achievement honors. In 2011, he was conferred with the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) for his contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
Alongside his wife, Jacobs co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, contributing to both film and television production and the training of performing artists in Nigeria. In recent years, he had largely withdrawn from public life due to ill health.
